Compared to spears, polearms support more rune words, tend to have a shorter reach, and tend to be slower for Amazons, about the same speed for Barbarians, and faster for other classes. Polearm damage scales with the wielder's Strength, with each point of Strength equivalent to 1% enhanced damage. The blade itself can either be curved or straight curved, convex swords like the falchion and the scimitar, are used for slashing attacks, and thus are only sharpened on one side of the blade. The item must have exactly the correct number of sockets- no more. Many designs include a guard that protects the fingers and knuckles. Items used for Runewords must be gray text items, normal, exceptional, or Elite.Low Quality, Superior, and Ethereal can be used, but you can not use magical, Rare, Set, Crafted, or Unique items, even if they have the correct number of sockets. There are 14 levels of gems, allowing the bonuses to grow quite large. Polearms are compatible with Barbarian Polearm Mastery. Diablo 2 swords come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
